Day Two in Laramie
November 29, 2007Well, I didn’t get my campus tour today. It was far, far too cold out. The wind chill was aobut 8 degrees. Jane did take me across campus (we cut through buildings where ever we could to stay out of the wind) to the main office for her department, Public Relations, and I met some of the people there. Jane’s boss Jim was really interested and took our picture and asked all about what I was doing. He certainly seemed to think my tour was a neat thing.
While we were over there, we stopped in and visited Pat in his office. They call me Queen of Cyberspace, but he spends all day doing web design so I felt like an amateur. He has two computers on his desk, a Mac and a PC, and each of the computers has two screens that he uses at the same time. I hadn’t seen anything like that before, and I was really impressed.
Since neither one of us wanted to be outside, Jane took me to some of her favorite cold day places. First we went to the geology museum to look at the dinosaur fossils. Wyoming is a big source for fossils and there are some nice ones there. I got to see Big Al, the Allosaurus who had his own documentary on the BBC and a T-rex skull and several other big fellows that I am happy I did not meet while they were alive. The biggest one, an apatosaurus, is down for repairs. Whew! There was also a display where you could actually watch people cleaning fossil dinosaurs that were found while digging a pipeline in Wyoming. That was really interesting. (Jane says to watch for the museum in dinosaur documentaries – sometimes they will use it as a setting for paleontologists who are talking. The green checkerboard linoleum floor and the upper balconies are hard to mistake.)
Next we went over to the conservatory. Blissful warmth at last! We saw all sorts of orchids and tropical plants and I felt right at home for a while.
Then it was back out into the cold, over to Jane’s office. We stopped to grab a quick picture of the front of Old Main, the oldest building on campus, and then walked very very quickly back to the office. Jane’s office is in the Ivinson Building, which was built in 1916 and served as a hospital for about 60 years. When the hospital moved, the University acquired it and now it houses Information Technology, the Campus Police Department, and the telephone operators, one of whom is Jane. Jane said she keeps thinking about taking her camera and taking photos to see if she gets any orbs in them, since it used to be a hospital, but then she remembers that she has to work in the evenings sometimes and thinks better of it.
Tomorrow we will try for the campus tour again. I hope it is a little bit warmer!

Pat shows me his two computer screens
This fellow is a plant eater, but he still looks impressive.
Now this is the ticket! Warmth and green plants!
Old Main – when the University started in 1886, this building was it!

Awesome! Fantastic campus.
FROM DOWNTURN PORT MELBOURNE ON THURSDAY 29th NOV. 2007. …..Blimey Sis you are in among the elite
using words I can hardly pronounce let alone spell
( You didn’t really spell them did you…Jane helped you write the story didn’t she ) Yes I knew it…!!!!!!!!!
Now I like the look of PATRICK and to be able to look at 4 screens at once sounds like my sort of GUY.
I could live with a bloke like that for on hand, straight away info ,on my limited computer skills.
( I can never get hold of that friend of ours in N/Fitzroy) you know the one I mean…name starts with ” H ”
I was thinking when I read your letter Sis that we have nothing here in our Museum where people can watch the staff doing their work …WHAT a great idea
I think I might just send them an email and tell them about Wyoming Museum…
In South Melbourne near where we live (You know Sis up near the market) there is THE VICTORIAN TAPESTRY WORKSHOP”where you can visit for a small charge and watch the weavers doing their work on gigantic tapestries for the governments rich people companies etc etc …this is the only place I know where you can go and see a project in motion…..
Re the weather Pris it’s hot here days way up in the 30’s and no rain, expecting a storm at the weekend but then sometimes the weather bureau are wrong (quite often) ……RUG up well when you go out with Jane
perhaps you should take your shawl or your lambswool jacket its looks pretty flimsy in what you’re wearing ,it’s not Arizona you know.
That hat of yours is very drafty, its too high for snow and ice ..I’ve been telling you this for years Pris…get a cap like the golfer Greg Norman wears ..not a nice bloke but his hats are ok…
Well darling must go its very busy here today just a quick run down on what I,ve been doing
1. Angie and Ken Drew, home from their holiday in China,
and they brought me back a beautiful hand made cup with a lid and inside a china drainer for the tea to go through ….just so delicate and georgeous..( make you a bit jealous Sis)
2. Patsy and Ralph picked up their puppy Roland I have been minding , from holiday in Queensland for a week
3. OUR Bro John and his wife Wendy were here o/night on their way to see their children who are scattered around the place …and because my toaster had packed up
he went out and bought me a new one this morning….so I feel pretty good….
All for now Darling have to go and do a bit of housework…I know you arn’t doing much of it lately
swanning around like most of my other friends and family.
I am not sure when its my turn…………..
Love to Jane and her Family from me
Your older loving Sister Druscilla.x.x.x.x.x.x.
The gathering momentum is palpable Jane. This is the most wonderful post and I am loving seeing gracious old buildings. The dinosaur exhibition looks just magnificent. They have just found fascinating skeletal remains at a beach outside Melbourne.
As for Priscilla’s title you must make it a point to watch Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Priscilla may not be able to use two screens at a time but she is proving to be a right social networker
out here in cyber land.
Pris — even though it was really, really cold you managed to have a little adventure. It’s nice learning about where Jane works and seeing a photo of Pat. He helped me when I was struggling with aligning objects in Adobe InDesign. The museum sounds awesome!
Great to see the Uni building and Pat. Pris is in for a very good time. Just great!
Hey, Pris, you are with the in-crowd now. A man who watches four monitors at once! Now that is something. And dinosaurs…my goodness girl, you are being educated. It is obvious that Jane has great plans for you. My advice though, bundle up, you don’t want to be catching cold…it’s a big change from the desert. I remember once when I was in out on a zero degree day, that was in Eastern Oregon, the tiny hairs inside my nose froze. That is the weirdest feeling so be sure to keep your little nose covered.

Don’t worry Sis, I’m trying to stay warm. Today isn’t quite as cold. And you got a new china tea cup? Be careful with this one, will you? I want to see it when I get back and I can’t if you break it first. Just a thought.
Drink lots of water. Remember, you don’t want to get dehydrated in the heat this year.
Oh- and Patrick only watches two monitors at a time – still more than enough for me! He has learned to help Jane only when she asks – she likes to learn things on her own when she can, but he is nice to have as a back up system!
Take care of Lois and everyone for me. I’m sending my love.
oxxxxxx
Pris
Pris sure is getting around! Lucky the dinosaur is a plant eater, but I bet she kept her broom tightly clutched just in case. Two computer screens? I’m impressed! Sounds like Pris is having a wonderful time of it all.
Pris is going to be the best educated queen of cyberspace by the time she gets back down under. I am very envious of her visit to the museum – I love natural history museums and dinosaurs
I am envious too of the dinosaurs and natural history museum! Such a lot to see and do in Laramie and a wonderful hostess as well. Pris is so fortunate!
